Preparation Requirements
Obtain the Original Document
Obtain the original, officially certified, or properly notarized document required for apostille processing.
Prepare the Document for Apostille
Ensure the document meets the requirements of the appropriate state or federal apostille authority.
Obtain the Apostille
Submit the eligible document to the appropriate apostille authority. For qualifying Florida documents, this is the Florida Department of State.
Arrange Translation After Apostille
Once the apostille has been issued, arrange for a qualified translator to translate the document and attached apostille certificate, as required by the receiving country.
Verify Translation Requirements
Confirm whether the destination country or receiving institution requires a certified translation, sworn translation, or translation completed by an officially recognized translator.
Separate Apostille for a Translation
If the receiving authority specifically requires the translator's certification to be apostilled, a separate notarization and apostille process may be necessary.
Important Restrictions
An apostille authenticates an eligible official or notarial signature. It does not verify the accuracy of a translation. Translation requirements vary by destination country and receiving institution.
Required Certification
Original Document Certification
Before translation, the underlying document must meet the certification or notarization requirements of the appropriate apostille authority.
Florida Apostille
For eligible Florida documents, the Florida Department of State authenticates the signature and authority of the appropriate Florida official or notary public.
Translation After Apostille
After receiving the apostille, the document and attached apostille certificate may be translated into the language required by the destination country.
Certified or Sworn Translation
Some receiving authorities require a translator's signed certification, sworn translation, or translation prepared by an officially recognized translator.
Separate Notarization of Translation
If the translator's certification itself must receive a Florida apostille, an eligible notarized certification may be required. The translator and the notary must be different individuals.
Original Notarized Certification
When seeking a separate Florida apostille for a notarized translator's certification, the original properly notarized document must contain a complete English-language notarial statement, the notary's original signature, and official seal.
Important Note
Apostilling the original document does not automatically certify its translation. A separately apostilled translator's certification authenticates the relevant notarial signature, not the accuracy of the translation.
Always confirm the receiving country's specific requirements before arranging translation or separate apostille processing.
