Preparation Requirements
Obtain the Religious Record
Request the religious document from the church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or other religious organization that maintains the record.
Examples include baptism certificates, confirmation certificates, religious marriage records, and membership letters.
Verify the Document
Ensure the document identifies the religious organization, the person named in the record, and the authorized representative.
Arrange Notarizatio
For privately issued religious documents, ask the authorized representative whether they can sign an appropriate certification or statement before a Florida notary public.
Confirm Apostille Eligibility
Religious records do not have a separately published Florida apostille procedure. Confirm that the document's notarization or official certification is acceptable before submission.
Submit for Apostille
Submit the eligible original properly notarized document to the Florida Department of State.
Important Restrictions
A religious marriage certificate is not necessarily a government-issued marriage certificate. If an official civil marriage record is required, obtain it from the appropriate government authority.
Required Certification
Religious Organization Certification
A privately issued religious record may be supported by a statement or certification signed by an authorized representative of the issuing religious organization.
Florida Notarization
When using the notarization route, the authorized signer must personally appear before a commissioned Florida notary public and complete the appropriate notarial act.
Notarial Certificate
The document must contain a complete notarial statement in English, with the required information, original notary signature, and official seal.
Original Document Requirement
Submit the original properly notarized document. A photocopy of the notarized document is not acceptable.
Government-Issued Records
If the receiving authority requires a civil birth, marriage, or death certificate, obtain the appropriate official certified record rather than substituting a religious certificate.
Important Note
A Florida apostille authenticates an eligible official or notarial signature. It does not verify religious membership, ceremonies, or the accuracy of the record's contents.
