Preparation Requirements

Obtain the Academic Document

Request an official transcript, diploma, or academic record from the Alaska school, college, or university that issued the document.

Contact the registrar or school records office and explain that the document is intended for an apostille.

School Registrar Certification

Ask the school registrar or another authorized school official to certify the academic document.

The Alaska Lieutenant Governor's Office recommends having the school incorporate an appropriate notarial certificate into its document certification procedure.

University of Alaska Documents

The University of Alaska Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Southeast provide procedures for certifying and notarizing official transcripts and diplomas for apostille purposes.

Contact the appropriate university registrar to obtain an apostille-ready document.

Diplomas and Degree Certificates

When a diploma requires an apostille, request a properly certified and notarized diploma or replacement from the issuing institution.

A photocopy of an existing diploma without appropriate certification may not be sufficient.

Alaska Notarization

For the standard notarial apostille process, the document must carry the original signature and official seal of a currently commissioned Alaska notary public.

The notarial certificate must be complete and comply with Alaska's requirements.

Copy Certification by Document Custodian

If the school cannot provide a registrar-certified and notarized document, Alaska permits a document custodian to sign a copy-certification statement before a notary.

The notary authenticates the custodian's signature rather than independently certifying the academic record.

This alternative should only be used after confirming that the receiving authority will accept it.

Original Signature Requirement

Alaska requires original official signatures for apostille processing. Photocopied notarial signatures are not acceptable.

Confirm the Receiving Country's Requirements

Some foreign universities, licensing authorities, and government agencies require official registrar certification rather than a privately certified copy.

Confirm the required document format before arranging notarization.

Important Information

National Apostille Center can review your academic document and certification to help determine whether it meets Alaska's apostille requirements.

Required Certification

School Registrar Certification

The preferred preparation method is certification by the school's registrar or another authorized academic records official.

The registrar's signature should be notarized by a commissioned Alaska notary public.

Alaska Notary Public

A notarized academic document must bear the original signature of a currently commissioned Alaska notary public.

Complete Notarial Certificate

The notarization must include:

  • The signature of the person whose signature is being notarized.

  • A properly completed notarial certificate.

  • The notary's original signature.

  • The notary's commission expiration date.

  • The official notary seal.

Reproducible Official Seal

Alaska requires the notary's seal to be reproducible when copied or scanned.

An embossed seal must be made visible in accordance with the Lieutenant Governor's instructions.

Document Custodian Certification

Alaska permits Copy Certification by Document Custodian when a suitable original registrar certification is unavailable.

The document custodian signs a certification statement, and an Alaska notary notarizes that signature.

This method authenticates the notary's signature, not the academic document itself.

Original Signatures

The Lieutenant Governor's Office does not authenticate photocopies of official signatures.

An original notarized certification or another eligible original official document is required.

Apostille Issuing Authority

Office of the Lieutenant Governor — State of Alaska.

Important Notice

An apostille authenticates the signature and official capacity of the notary or other eligible public official. It does not independently verify academic achievements, the authenticity of the degree, or the institution's accreditation.
