Preparation Requirements

Identify the Employment Document

Common documents include employment verification letters, work experience certificates, employer declarations, salary verification letters, job confirmation letters, and employment-related affidavits.

Obtain the Document From Your Employer

Request the required document from your employer, human resources department, or another authorized company representative.

Whenever possible, the document should be prepared on official company letterhead.

Employment Verification Letters

The letter should identify the employee's full legal name, employer, job title, employment dates, and any additional information required by the receiving country.

Employment status, salary, and job responsibilities should be included when specifically requested.

Work Experience Certificates

A work experience certificate should identify the employee, the employer, the relevant employment period, and the nature of the work performed.

The certificate should be signed by an authorized employer representative.

Employer Signature

Privately issued employment documents should contain the signature of an authorized employer representative.

An unsigned employment record or ordinary electronic printout may require additional certification before apostille processing.

Alaska Notarization

For the standard Alaska apostille process, privately issued employment documents generally require a properly notarized employer signature or an appropriate notarized certification statement.

The notarization must be completed by a commissioned Alaska notary public.

Review the Notarial Certificate

The notarization must include the notary's original signature, commission expiration date, official seal, and a complete notarial certificate.

The seal must be legible and reproducible when copied or scanned.

Original Signature Requirement

Alaska requires original official signatures for conventional paper apostille processing.

Photocopied or scanned notarial signatures are not acceptable.

Employment Records and Document Custodian Certification

For certain existing employment records, an authorized records custodian may use Alaska's Copy Certification by Document Custodian procedure.

The custodian signs a statement certifying the copy and has that statement notarized.

This method should be used only when the receiving authority accepts a custodian-certified copy.

Government-Issued Employment Documents

Official employment records issued by Alaska government agencies may follow a different certification procedure if they contain an eligible government official's signature.

Confirm the Destination Country

An apostille applies to countries participating in the Hague Apostille Convention.

Some foreign authorities require a particular employment letter format, professional verification, or translation.

Important Information

National Apostille Center can review the employment document and notarization before processing to help identify certification issues that could prevent authentication.

Required Certification

Authorized Employer Representative

Privately issued employment letters and work experience certificates should be signed by an authorized employer representative.

Alaska Notary Public

For the standard notarial apostille procedure, the employer representative's signature or an appropriate certification statement must be properly notarized by a commissioned Alaska notary public.

Original Notarial Signature

The document must contain the notary's original signature. Photocopies of official signatures are not accepted for conventional paper apostilles.

Complete Notarial Certificate

The notarization must include the appropriate notarial certificate, the notary's signature, commission expiration date, and official seal.

An incomplete notarization may not qualify for authentication.

Official Notary Seal

The seal must be legible and reproducible when copied or scanned.

An embossed seal must be shaded with pencil or ink so the impression is visible.

Copy Certification by Document Custodian

Alaska notaries cannot directly certify photocopies.

When appropriate, a document custodian may sign a copy-certification statement before an Alaska notary.

The resulting apostille authenticates the notary's signature, not the accuracy of the underlying employment record.

Government-Issued Employment Records

Official Alaska government employment documents may qualify for direct authentication when they bear an original or otherwise acceptable official signature that the Lieutenant Governor's Office can verify.

Additional County Certification

Alaska does not generally require separate county clerk authentication for properly notarized documents receiving a state apostille.

Federal Employment Documents

Documents issued by federal agencies may require federal authentication rather than an Alaska state apostille.

Apostille Issuing Authority

Office of the Lieutenant Governor — State of Alaska.

Important Notice

An apostille authenticates the relevant official's signature and capacity. It does not independently verify employment history, salary, professional experience, or the accuracy of the employer's statements.
