Preparation Requirements

Identify the Vehicle Document

Common documents include vehicle certificates of title, bills of sale, vehicle registration records, ownership declarations, lien release letters, and vehicle authorization documents.

Alabama Vehicle Titles

Obtain the original Alabama certificate of title or determine whether an official title record is needed.

An original vehicle title does not automatically qualify for an Alabama apostille. The document must have an acceptable public official's certification or an appropriate notarized supporting statement.

Certified Vehicle Title Records

Official certified copies of title or registration records may be requested through the Alabama Department of Revenue.

The certification must be reviewed to determine whether the issuing official's signature is eligible for apostille or requires additional preparation.

Vehicle Bills of Sale

Prepare a complete bill of sale identifying the buyer, seller, vehicle, and transaction.

Include the vehicle identification number (VIN), make, model, year, date of sale, purchase price, and required signatures.

For apostille purposes, a privately prepared bill of sale may require notarization by an Alabama notary public.

Vehicle Ownership Declarations

Ownership affidavits and privately prepared declarations should be signed by the appropriate individual and properly notarized when using the Alabama notarial apostille process.

Vehicle Registration Records

Obtain an official registration record from the responsible Alabama authority when a foreign institution requires proof of registration.

Uncertified online printouts may not be sufficient.

Lien Release Documents

Request the original lien release or an appropriate certified document from the lienholder or issuing authority.

Privately issued lien release letters may require additional notarization for apostille purposes.

Alabama Notarization

Where the document follows the notarial apostille route, it must bear the original signature and official embossed or ink-stamped seal of a currently commissioned Alabama notary public.

Foreign-Language Documents

Documents written in a foreign language must be accompanied by a notarized English translation for Alabama authentication.

Important Information

Alabama vehicle title transfer requirements and apostille requirements are separate.

National Apostille Center can review your vehicle document to help identify the appropriate certification before apostille processing.

Required Certification

Official Alabama Vehicle Records

Vehicle title and registration records should be obtained from the Alabama Department of Revenue or the appropriate authorized issuing office when official certification is required.

Certified Copies

Certified copies must contain the appropriate government certification. Whether they qualify directly for an Alabama apostille depends on the signature and seal of the certifying official.

Alabama Notary Public

Privately prepared vehicle documents, including bills of sale, ownership affidavits, and authorization letters, may qualify through proper notarization by a currently commissioned Alabama notary public.

Original Notarial Signature and Seal

The document must contain the notary's original signature and official embossed or ink-stamped seal.

Vehicle Title Assignments

Alabama does not generally require notarization of a motor vehicle title assignment for an ordinary title transfer.

However, this does not mean that an unnotarized title assignment automatically qualifies for an apostille. Additional certification may be needed for international use.

County Authentication

Additional county authentication of an Alabama notary's commission is generally not required for an apostille.

For notarized documents requiring certification for a non-Hague country, Alabama requires additional county authentication.

Apostille Issuing Authority

Alabama Secretary of State — Authentication Division.

Important Notice

An apostille authenticates an eligible public official's signature, seal, and official capacity. It does not independently establish vehicle ownership, confirm a clear title, or verify that a vehicle is free of liens.
