Preparation Requirements

Identify the Religious Document

Common documents include baptism certificates, church marriage records, confirmation certificates, religious membership records, letters from religious institutions, and declarations issued by clergy.

Obtain the Document From the Religious Institution

Request the document from the church, parish, synagogue, mosque, temple, or other religious organization maintaining the original record.

Whenever possible, obtain a newly issued certificate or an official letter confirming the information.

Baptism and Confirmation Certificates

Request a certificate issued by the religious institution maintaining the original sacramental record.

The document should identify the person named, the religious institution, the relevant event, and the authorized official issuing the certificate.

Church Marriage Records

Obtain a church-issued marriage certificate or a certified statement from the religious institution.

A religious marriage record is different from a government-issued Alabama marriage certificate. If the receiving authority requests a civil marriage certificate, obtain the appropriate official vital record instead.

Religious Letters and Declarations

Letters confirming religious membership, religious ceremonies, or other faith-related matters should be prepared on official institutional letterhead and signed by an authorized representative.

Alabama Notarization

Privately issued religious documents generally require an appropriate notarized signature or supporting certification when using Alabama's notarial apostille procedure.

The notarization must be performed by a currently commissioned Alabama notary public and include the notary's original signature and official seal.

Review the Document

Ensure the document is complete and legible. Confirm that any supporting certification clearly identifies the religious institution and the person authorized to issue the document.

Foreign-Language Documents

Documents written in a foreign language must be accompanied by a notarized English translation when presented for Alabama authentication.

Confirm the Receiving Country's Requirements

Some countries and religious authorities require a specific type of ecclesiastical certification or additional confirmation from the relevant religious organization.

An apostille does not replace these requirements.

Important Information

Religious records and government-issued vital records follow different preparation procedures.

National Apostille Center can review your document to help determine whether it is suitable for Alabama apostille processing.

Required Certification

Religious Institution Certification

Privately issued religious certificates and records should be signed or certified by an authorized representative of the religious institution maintaining the record.

Alabama Notary Public

When using Alabama's notarial apostille procedure, the religious document or an appropriate supporting certification must bear the original signature and official seal of a currently commissioned Alabama notary public.

Proper Notarial Certificate

The notarization must include a properly completed notarial certificate appropriate to the act performed.

The notary authenticates the relevant signature or administers the required oath or affirmation. The notary does not independently verify the religious event or the accuracy of the underlying record.

Original Signature and Official Seal

The Alabama Secretary of State requires an acceptable original public official's signature and an embossed or ink-stamped official seal for authentication.

Government-Issued Marriage Certificates

Official Alabama civil marriage certificates follow the state's vital records certification procedure rather than the private religious document notarization procedure.

County Authentication

Additional county authentication of an Alabama notary's commission is generally not required for an apostille.

For notarized documents requiring certification for a non-Hague country, Alabama requires county authentication through the appropriate probate judge's office.

Apostille Issuing Authority

Alabama Secretary of State — Authentication Division.

Important Notice

An apostille authenticates an eligible public official's signature, seal, and capacity. It does not independently verify religious membership, sacramental records, or recognition of a religious event by a foreign authority.
