Preparation Requirements

Identify the Professional Document

Common documents include professional license verification letters, occupational licenses, certificates of professional standing, registration confirmations, and professional certification records.

Obtain Verification From the Licensing Authority

Contact the Alabama licensing board or government agency responsible for issuing your professional license.

Request an official license verification letter or certification identifying your name, license number, professional designation, and current licensing status.

Professional License Copies

An ordinary photocopy, wallet card, or online license lookup may not be acceptable for apostille purposes.

Where possible, obtain an officially certified license verification document from the issuing authority.

Certificates of Good Standing

If the receiving country requests proof that a professional license is active and in good standing, obtain a certificate or verification letter from the appropriate Alabama licensing board.

Confirm whether the foreign authority requires disciplinary history or additional professional information.

Healthcare Professional Licenses

Physicians, nurses, pharmacists, therapists, and other regulated healthcare professionals should obtain verification from their respective Alabama licensing boards.

The issuing board's certification format should be reviewed before apostille processing.

Other Occupational Licenses

Real estate, accounting, engineering, legal, construction, and other professional credentials may require verification from the agency or professional authority responsible for the license.

Alabama Notarization

Where the issuing authority cannot provide a document with a signature and seal eligible for direct apostille, an appropriate notarized certification may be an option.

Any notarization must be properly completed by a currently commissioned Alabama notary public.

Check the Document

Ensure the document is legible, complete, and identifies the issuing authority.

The document must carry an acceptable official certification or qualify through a recognized notarial process.

Foreign-Language Documents

Documents written in a foreign language must be accompanied by a notarized English translation for Alabama authentication.

Important Information

Professional licensing boards use different verification procedures. National Apostille Center can review your license or certification to help determine the appropriate preparation requirements before apostille processing.

Required Certification

Official Licensing Authority Verification

Professional licenses and certifications should be verified by the Alabama board, agency, or other authority responsible for issuing the credential.

Licensing Board Certification

Where available, request an official verification letter or certification containing the issuing authority's name, an authorized signature, and any applicable official seal.

A board-issued document does not automatically qualify for direct Alabama apostille processing.

Alabama Notary Public

When an appropriate notarized certification is used, the document must bear the original signature and official embossed or ink-stamped seal of a currently commissioned Alabama notary public.

Proper Notarial Certificate

The notarial certificate must be complete and appropriate to the act performed.

Notarization of an individual's statement about a license does not independently establish that the license is valid or in good standing.

Original Official Signature and Seal

The Alabama Secretary of State requires an acceptable original signature and official seal for authentication.

Its published apostille instructions identify Alabama notaries public, probate judges, and the current Alabama State Registrar as eligible officials.

County Authentication

Additional county authentication of an Alabama notary's commission is generally not required for an apostille.

For notarized documents requiring certification for a non-Hague country, Alabama requires additional county authentication of the notary's commission.

Federally Issued Professional Credentials

Documents issued by federal authorities may require federal authentication rather than an Alabama apostille.

Apostille Issuing Authority

Alabama Secretary of State — Authentication Division, for eligible Alabama documents.

Important Notice

An apostille authenticates the relevant public official's signature, seal, and capacity. It does not independently verify professional competence, confer international licensing rights, or guarantee recognition of a professional qualification in another country.
